Monkees getting high for science in North Carolina

In the great state of North Carolina Armada Monkees are getting high on the government supply! Much to the chagrin of Tea Party morons and Republican dolts, the U.S. government has decided to fund a research project at the illustrious Wake Forest University in that fat easy girl of cities Winston-Salem (NC).

An analyst at the Civitas Institute seized on that image when selecting a cocaine addiction study at Wake Forest University Medical School as No. 1 on a list of the "10 worst federal stimulus projects in North Carolina." Civitas' Brian Balfour takes swipes at projects, writing that they "seem completely unrelated to avoiding an economic 'catastrophe,' but rather an ad hoc satisfaction of countless dubious wish lists."

So, what is the $71,623 federal stimulus grant paying for?

Well, a job, said Mark Wright, a spokesman for the Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

"It's actually the continuation of a job that might not still be there if it hadn't been for the stimulus funding. And it's a good job," Wright said. "It's also very worthwhile research."

The study is examining the effects of cocaine on a particular neurotransmitter among monkeys who have had a long-term addiction to cocaine.

The medical school boasts a significant body of work studying addiction. Ultimately, the study could lead to better treatment for recovering cocaine addicts.

Balfour also cited another Wake Forest study. This one is studying whether yoga and other non-pharmaceutical therapies such as wellness classes can help alleviate hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause.

"How does this study help revive the economy?" Balfour asked.

Well, again, jobs, said Nancy Avis, a professor in the Department of Social Sciences and Health policy at the medical school. The funding, more than $147,000 over two years, will contribute to the salaries of six people.

"What's the deal with all the monkey shit?"

People sometimes ask me (after on of my many tirades); “What's the deal with all the monkey shit?”. It's easy to answer that with a simple, “I don't like humans anymore.” Or I could launch into how I created the name while sitting on a bench in the middle of Broadway when I lived in New York. To go deeper than that though I would have to take a trip back in time. Back to when I was in prison. I used to hang out with a 6'6” 19 year-old Russian hacker, a 4'6” psychiatrist (who got busted selling drugs to high profile clients) , and a Yugoslavian gun runner. We each considered ourselves anarchist, and would spend most of our evenings walking laps around the track on sunny days and simple lapping the yard on most days. As we circled the prison grounds we would have philosophical debates, discuss the news of the day, and tell stories of our lives before prison. We would also share books and gush over past anarchist who share our common bond of incarceration. All this would help shape my own rhetoric that I had been espousing my whole life. I had been calling myself an anarchist and preaching its virtues to the heavens since junior high school. Yet I found I had a very vague idea of what anarchism entailed. I found my knowledge of anarchist history and literature was limited to say the least. More importantly I found that I did not see eye to eye with even the most common of anarchist believers. They in my opinion where too weak. Modern Anarchy did not go far enough and left room for future corruption. In order to truly free mankind from the yolk one must seek to remove all forms of hierarchy and the structure of power. Anarchy left room for leaders and order. I desired Chaos and complete freedom. You should have seen us though with me normally in the center and the midget Dr. on the tail end, plus me being the only crazy looking black kid hanging out with a bunch of crazy looking white dudes, it was something to see. I used to have more faith in humanity, then came that day in September that no one will let you forget. I was in prison then and the day after was fine, but as the weeks went on my compatriots lost their nerve. No on wanted to be seen as terrorist. So they toned down their revolutionary rhetoric and shrunk away. The Dr. dropped out first then the Slav, the Russian was fine but you could see the nervousness in his eyes if we passed someone while we wer talking about it. I could care less. I felt empowered. In my mind the revolution was on it's way. That soon mankind would all rise up against the powers that be and all towers would fall. Then I got out around November to find that America had regressed back into the 1950's. All of a sudden it was like the nukes were coming and everybody needed to build bomb shelters. Flags were waving everywhere and the evil tide of nationalism was everywhere. I suddenly understood what it felt like to be Jewish in Germany 1937.

I once dreamed of a techno/cyber-punk/new-wave future, one step removed from Mad Max. I saw a grand vision of Barter Towns and Logan's Run scenarios. A year later my dreams where gone. All the middle class punk-rockers traded in their mow hawks for SUV's with yellow ribbons. Those that didn't hid under their beds afraid to protest or write a zine. The only people making any noise where half-baked college kids and their ex-hippie parents. The media made the anti-war effort a laughing stock. The police suppressed the rest. Real dissent was shipped of to Gitmo and the rest was history. I tried to stay in the game. Going to protest in New York, and Atlanta, but what I saw was worse than not going. The radical movement in this country that had been growing throughout the nineties had been marginalized. Thanks to Fox News and a ever growing color coded climate of fear. I witnessed people in New York being beaten by police only to go home and hear nothing happened on the nightly news. The anarchist had retreated to the safety of their lofts and video games. The only people left in the streets were the kooks and cranks and left-over hippies. This would change over time, but right then it was disheartening. It was as if someone had ripped out the very heart of everything I believed in. It was then I began to turn my back on humanity.

In New York I became a parody. I wore a confederate flag belt buckle and extolled the virtues of the south, while wearing punk rock T-sirts and hip hop jeans. I tried to confront peoples ideals and beliefs with sarcasm and attitude. Instead I just got drunk and came off as a joke. When I returned to Atlanta I tried to be as confrontational and reshape opinions of what it meant to be radical, but instead I just came off as a asshole unable to “chill” and “get along”. Until one day I woke up. I realized it wasn't the message it wasn't the movement, it was humanity. The problem I was having was that no matter what humans would not change, someone would always seek to dominate over another. The question then became what to do with that knowledge. I turned my back on humanity but, then what would I become. Thanks to my old buddy V2 and his Anti-Alien movement I wasn't about to become an E.T. So I took it back, way back, to before “Beneath the Planet of the Apes”, into Monkeedom!

When I left new York for Atlanta I began studying Hindu Mythology and ancient mythology's in general. This lead to a discovery of monkey myths and legends that thread through most of the known world. I had earlier, while sitting on that bench at 77th and Broadway, created the name Monkee Armada. So I had the name, I now had some thing tangible a history. All I had to do was pull it all together and tie it with my own personal philosophy. The only problem was that as I had gotten older my own personell philosophy began to change. I didn't care about saving the world from itself anymore. I saw the larger picture, and figured nature was taking its course. When I turned twenty-five, I began to focus more on myself. Who I was, who I wanted to be, and who I had become. I had to redefine me first. The world around me seemed full of cowards, all flag waving and ignorant. Those still in the struggle for liberation seemed sheltered and pompous. In truth it was my own arrogance, that blinded me and cut me off from my faith in revolution. Not to mention that the media had long co-opted revolution as a marketing gimmick. Even in Atlanta (one of the last pockets of free thought-believe it or not), I felt alone in my desire to challenge the status quo. I was not of course, but this feeling only helped fuel my withdrawal from humanity. When I finally left Atlanta for St. Louis, late last year, I slowed down on my drinking enough to finally hash out the “Codas Armadas” A quasi bible of ancient legends and my own anarchistic beliefs, that will hopefully bridge the gap. I've been searching for a long time for a way to express my opinions without coming off either too silly or contrived-for lack of a better word. This I think may be my opus.

Remember When....

Remember Zines? I miss them. I used to have one way back when. Back when we
used to care. Back when there was a since of community. I know I'm
stuck in this nostalgia mode, bear with me 30 is a big number. Three
decades of kicking ass and forgetting names. And, there have been a
lot of forgotten names. A lot of lost nights. Tripping face on acid
or sh rooms, smoked out my mind on some killer Hydro. Whiskey River
took my mind. But I can still vaguely recall the early years, back in
D.C. (Davie County, hanging out at the Taco Bell in Clemons. Shows
at the Armory and the day Evolution opened up. The mall before we
tried to blow it up. Hellenbach and what was that one place way out,
where No Talent played that one time? Fuck where did all the time go.
Where did all the money go. I couldn't afford to put out a zine now
unless I printed it myself. Hey? It would be cheaper to buy ink
cartridges than pay a printer. Perhaps I'll start up the old RR
again. There seems to be a lot of talking heads these days though.
Everyone has an opinion and with blogs, the Internet, and millions of
channels on TV anyone can spit out there version of what's going on.
I don't necessarily see a need to print out a black and white rant on
this society. Besides things have become so ass-backwards and
completely fucked I don't see how one mans call to defiance is going
to ring out. I do need to start focusing what forum I do I have
(ahem). Thing is I've reached out here before and not much of a
response. The chick of that dumb Bret Heart show got 1024 comments
yesterday alone. I gotta figure out how to break the glass ceiling.
Of course That means I'm going to have to up the ante on the content.
I gotta think of something more potent to write about. Thing is I
look back on the stuff I used to print and it wasn't much different.
My angry laments on the world and my undying hatred of mankind was
just in its infancy back then. Now I have shed my humanity for full
pledge monkee-ism. Viva La Revolution!

There's alot of shit in the yard.

I haven't had much time to follow up on my last two post about Paris, but now I don't really feel the need to say much more. I was outraged as (as were many people) about the complete blatant travesty going on and the whole farce that she was let out of jail in the first place. If I cried every time I was in the back of a cop car I'd have no tears left. I was relived to see her thrown back in though. This whole thing has said a lot about our society. Nothing that someone who has been in jail as much as I have didn't already know though. I am glad to see the major media finally excepting some of the blame in all this. It is after all us and them that made her famous for doing nothing. There was actually a guy on Fox News-of all places-saying that they'll stop reporting on her when we stop watching so it's up to you and me to turn our backs on these needless celebutaunts and set our sites on much more important issues. There are more pressing issues being over looked as the nation pays attention to the travails of some rich skinny bitch. Believe it or not!

Such as the racist debate oer immigration reform, or the anti-Bush riots happening in Italy. The missing girl found in a Connecticut closet, or the dead one in Kansas. Of course this too says a lot about our country since i doubt the Kansas girl would have meant anything if she wasn't "scrubbed in sunshine" or the picture of an "All-American Girl". The Connecticut case may fade sooner though because it's beginning to look like the 15-year old girl there was a willing participant in some home-made porno. The big thing we all need to be up in arms over however is the fact that Fred Thompson (the actor/Senator/potential presidential nominee) is calling for the President to Pardon ole' Scooter Libby. Whom if you recall was the top aide to Dick Cheney convicted of lying to a Federal Grand Jury and last week sentenced to two plus years in Club Fed. Well if things go his way he may get less time than Paris and that's a much bigger travesty of justice. If there was a pseudo-celebrity trail to follow it should be the Phil Spector murder case. I don't know how many of you have been following this on Court-TV, but that mother-fucker is guilty- he killed that bitch! If he gets off because he produced a few records in the sixties then I think riots are in order. Hell! I just think riots are in order anyway. I mean regardless of the minor stuff, we still have the illegal Iraq War on our hands. The possibility of conflict with Iran. Thanks to idiots like Joe Lieberman calling for action. We have hundreds still being illegally detained in Gitmo and that secret Brooklyn jail, and God knows where else. There is a lot going on in this world today and enough crap to be angry over.

I know this may sound like a departure from my normal let's get drunk and fuck attitude some of you are used to. To those who have known me for a while this is pretty standard fare. I have been involved in a lot of protest in my day. Including the largest anti-war protest leading up to the Iraq War in New York. I saw a lot of people beaten by police for no reason, and nothing changing. When I moved to Atlanta there were barely fifty people coming out to the protest. Those that showed were met with taunts and insults from passerbys and a bunch of flag waving assholes driving by. Since September 11 th this country has been a washed in a sea of waving flags. So much so that we haven't been able to see our rights and freedoms being stripped from us. If Kent State happened today no one would even car. And if they did then Bill O'Reily would call them terrorist or traitors. When y'all are ready though I'll light the cocktails and we'll get this party started. There needs to be something done and the call to arms was seven years ago.

For tonight however there's three hours of wrestling on and I'm happy. I'm getting ready for a good night and I don't want to think about Paris or Scooter, or the space shuttle falling apart upon re-entry (which may happen). I just want to see a Monkey-Flip, and a Big Back Body Drop, and Ric Flair! So it's time to kick rocks-DEUCES!!!

Jesus is this my life

Time was I would have something important to say, some rich social comment on the state of our world today. Today however, I am quite tired, and completely fed up with my inability to get decent work in this god-forsaken town (St. Louis). My muscles feel heavy and it sluggish. It looks like rain and I don't have an umbrella. My gals birth-day is coming and today is one of my best friends b-day. I have absolutely no money and no promising prospects of getting any before the end of next week. I had a job or so I thought but for some reason my employer just quite answering her phone and I have no clue as to what I'm going to do next. I have been out early all this week with the exception of yesterday. No Luck as of yet. Knowing me I will get a great job just in time for me to be forced to work on the night Morrissey plays. Which is in little over a weeks time. I have my tickets already so I know something is going to have to go wrong. I'm trying to fight this since of dread with playful things, to remind myself that all isn't lost. But today I did the unthinkable. I applied at not one but two corporations. Apple bees (sic), and Target (gag), can you believe it! I have applied to corporations before even worked for a few. I just figured I beyond that at this late hour in my life. Yet I need a job more than I need air right now. I'm broke beyond the point of belief and it's beginning to strain my beautiful relationship. Several arguments have already erupted over my lack of viable employment. I don't want to break up my happy home, so at this point I'll flip burgers at McDonald's if I have to. God pleas don't let it come to that.

In the meantime I've been working extra hard on this whole Monkee Armada thing I came up with a few years ago. It's been a slow evolution from a few drunken sketches while i was in NYC to this bizzaro pseudo-cult-revolutionary group. I'm working almost entirely with no feed back which is hard enough. The grand opus of the group "The Codas Armadas" is nearly complete after nearly two years of sporadic typing. Later this year it should be ready for public scrutiny. Until then I've been busy mutating pics that I will soon offer up for your consumption. Last night I did a grat batch that I'm super proud of I should have them up in a few days until then this will have to suffice bitches!!!
